“OLD GOLD”
1927 Packard Limousine Model 433
“Old Gold” is named after a De Havilland aeroplane. MacPherson Robertson of Macrobertson Chocolate fame (think Cherry Ripe & Freddo frogs…..) was most probably the original owner of this beautiful Car. He owned the largest fleet of Packard cars in Melbourne.
In 1927 Mac Robertson funded the purchase of a De Havilland Giant for Horrie Miller Airlines in Adelaide. Mac insisted the plane be called “Old Gold”. The airline became MacRobertson Miller Airlines and was subsequently sold to Ansett.MacPherson Robertson went on to sponsor the 1934 Air Race from London to Australia.
She is a beautiful car, seating 6 passengers plus the driver. She was built as a limousine, (she is not stretched) . She was fully restored to Concourse a number of years ago. And has been a Chauffeur vehicle again. She has been entered in the Bay to Birdwood a number of times and has been a top 10 finalist twice.
“AMELIA”
1928 Packard Limousine Model 533
“Amelia “is named after the famous American aviator Amelia Earhart who set many flying records and championed the advancement of women in aviation.
In 1928 she became the first woman to fly, as a passenger, across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1932 she was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She went on to many aviation “firsts”. A woman with a brave spirit.
We know less about “Amelia”. She has probably come from NSW and was also restored some time ago. She has been fitted with long distance fuel tanks (and air conditioning!!) and has been driven around Australia. She was also returned to being chauffeur driven a number of years ago. She is a Bay to Birdwood Concourse winner.
